Greek "Conservatives" win
can't post link yet
The parties have starkly different views about what to do about the €240 billion ($300 billion) in bailout loans that Greece has been given by international lenders, and the harsh austerity measures that previous Greek governments had to accept to get the funds.
I have to wonder; Greece is a small country with a debt to gdp of 145%
How is giving them another bail out going to help?
and
Wouldn't it be better if the EU just cut their losses and dropped Greece?

Financially, sure, it would be better for the EU to let Greece fail. Doing that though, ignores the human side of the equation. What level of poverty, unemployment and human misery are you willing to allow?

If you won't let people learn the negative lessons of life, they sure as hell won't learn to avoid them.

That's like saying that people should have known better than to live in New Orleans before Katrina hit because Hurricanes have hit the city before and that no aid should be given.
There has to be a way to help Greece help herself. I'm not a social welfare state agitator, but I don't want to see all aid ended either.

But when they give ya four days to get the hell out... Well.

Self determination just happened. The people spoke.
And I'm with you on the rest. I'm for a hand up, not a handout.

Not quite the analogy since living in New Orleans does not create hurricanes while living beyond your means does create fiscal messes. One is obviously a controllable situation while the other is just climate roulette.
Bailing out the Greeks now, without changing the underlying reasons the bailout was needed in the first place, won't change anything. It may push the next crisis down the road a bit but it won't prevent another one. One that may be even worse. I feel sorry for the Greeks, but then I feel sorry for alcoholics and drug abusers as well. I just don't think it's a good idea to keep giving them money to keep buying booze and drugs. especially when I'm skimping on necessities because of all my other financial commitments.
Look, this is gonna hurt, but either you pay for it now and learn your lesson, or you are just going to produce a bigger hurt down the line. The Germans weren't always the savers and sound fiscal warriors they are today. They had to go through Weimar and WWII to have it rammed through their heads. Lot of pain but good came of it. The Greeks are going to have to learn a lesson as well which will hopefully not be as bad as the Germans. If they choose to continue being spendthrifts then...have fun storming that castle.

Hey, maybe the U.S. will learn from Greece's example too!
