Lightbulb Walking through doorways causes forgetting

We’ve all experienced it: The frustration of entering a room and forgetting what we were going to do. Or get. Or find.

New research from University of Notre Dame Psychology Professor Gabriel Radvansky suggests that passing through doorways is the cause of these memory lapses.

“Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an ‘event boundary’ in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away,” Radvansky explains.

“Recalling the decision or activity that was made in a different room is difficult because it has been compartmentalized.”

You know what date is on this coin? 1958. It's been traveling 22 years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails, and you have to say. Call it.

My personal research shows that if you decide to reply to this thread and open the reply box in a new window, you will likely forget what you were going to say.

I'm glad to hear this, because it happens to me too often. But I doubt that has anything to do with why, when I walk out into my yard, I can't recall the first name of my neighbor from across the street whom I've known for 15 years when he greets me out there.

But the room thing is easy to understand, as it relates to the change of a frame of reference, and the researcher seems to be giving this a bit too much thought.
