Adolf Hitler's parents fight to get kids back
In 2008, Deborah and Heath Campbell of Holland Township, NJ made national headlines over a birthday cake. When Deborah told a ShopRite bakery department she wanted her son's name -- Adolf Hitler -- spelled out, her request was denied.
One month later, Adolf and his siblings, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie were removed from their home and put into foster care because of alleged abuse and parental incompetence. The Campbells denied any kind of abuse and claimed that the only reason their children were taken was because of their names, NBC 10 reports.
The couple says that a New Jersey court vindicated them of the allegations last month, but has not given custody back to the parents.

I agree that these parents are despicable, and hard to defend. But the rule of law is a simple thing to defend. No crime? No time. They should get the kids back.

What about the child? Google "santorum" someday ... bad shit happens to names, it's just what happens. Now the parent's reason for naming the kid that may be wrong, but the name itself isn't inherently bad in any way. I'm rather pissed that my family (and many other Jewish ones) had to change our names in the US during that war because of people here thinking it was "bad", yep, my family's original name was Hitler. It was wrong to force us to give up our birthrights just because of one nutjob psycho, and it would be wrong to judge anyone's character by their name. We know this, we learned this in the US with the insanity that is a war on terrorism "flagging" names that are actually quite common here.
The true irony is that because of the shadow carried by that name, the kid may grow up to be the next MLK, and may even win back the power of the Hitler name. It's a dream yes, but it's also possible.

Yep, they should get their kids back, no law against a poor choice of name for your kid. It was selfish on the part of the parents to put all history that the names carry on their children's shoulders. While it may be an opportunity to umuddy the names, it's a life of scorn, teasing and hatred from others kids don't deserve, and as adults, not a battle they should be expected or required to fight. I hope their procreation days are over.

That's a very interesting take. I hadn't even considered that. While I'm sure that is not the intentions of the parents, it is possible. But can you imagine how hard he would have to work to conquer the stigma of his name if he were to decide not to change it?

Well, let's take this thought a bit further, and suppose no one ever tried to stop the stigmas associated with names ... a few generations from now more names get added to that "bad" list ... and more people get thought of as "bad" because they inherited a name on that list. Eventually (assuming our species survives long enough), you would run out of names. People would have to name their kids Tomato Rice just to avoid stigmas, which is an even less pleasant thought.
There are lots of people with really "bad" names across the globe, names that sound are are words of the human anatomy for instance, they overcome those names all the time. It's time we stopped thinking in terms of labels as a society, as a whole, and start focusing on the individual. It's, quite strangely, my biggest gripe about politics and political discussion to. Funny how logic from some things can be applied to so many unrelated things.

There have been plenty of evil men throughout the course of history. While Hitler was just another man on that list, he is widely regarded as being at the top of the list. We have a President who shares his middle name with a murderous dictator, and a candidate who shares his name with the first documented murderer. I don't think we will run out of names any time soon. And if a mans family name were Hitler, and he were to keep it, that would be one thing. To name your child "Adolf Hitler" when your last name is Campbell is quite another. I personally think it's wrong for the parents to do that, but it is not and should not be illegal.

Not entirely, Hitler use to be a very common surname and middle name in Germany, as common as John was in the US at one time. As I said, it was only because of that one person that the name virtually vanished ... and not always by choice. My point is a name is a name, a person is who they are. Sometimes giving them something to overcome at a young age can prove highly beneficial to them in life as well, especially a social stigma. Ever hear the saying that "midgets are the tallest people"? It's about their character for overcoming the stigma of being a midget that makes them tall.
