Default Keeping America safe

Makes you feel proud of your country, don't it?

If you thought your medical records were private, think again citizen.

I don't really get the point. She's Canadian. I have no idea what they do with their medical records there, but there might be a clue as to how this happened right there in the article.

Quote:
Richardson said she’d had no discussion whatsoever with the agent at the airport about her medical history or background.

Previous to her hospitalization in 2012, Richardson had attempted suicide in 2001, as a result of delusions. But medications put her on an even keel and stabilized her for years, with no incidents.

A personal relationship breakup in 2012 caused her clinical depression and hospitalization (there was no police involvement). But again, her condition stabilized and Richardson, who has a master’s degree in counselling, sees a psychiatrist with whom she has a very good relationship.
She loses a certain amount of credibility with me when she complains about her medical records not being private and then gives her entire mental health history to be printed in the local paper.

She's Canadian. So this particular case isn't a citizen issue for 'Merkins. It is still bothersome, because if the American control and surveillance state has hospitalization records for foreigners one can only imagine what short of tabs the Obamite fappers in public "service" have on you lot.

And for the rest of us, it serves as a useful reminder that the US becoming a surveillance state not seen since Erich Honecker's East Germany has consequences far outside the US borders.

At least that latter fact is somewhat self-correcting. I'm attending a conference in Frankfurt next week where one of the top topics is how to phase out IT software and hardware from US companies for alternatives that are not riddled with NSA/IRS/TSA back doors and wiretaps. That is now an official EU topic with central EU backing available. There is, naturally, a fair amount of self-serving protectionism involved in that, but frankly it's becoming ever harder to argue against it. Ok, hardware made in China probably comes with Chinese back doors, but at least the Chinese are mainly interested political suppression of domestic dissidents, not to spy on my medical bills or my next-quarter preliminary cash flows.

Right, so I'm back after two days of yapping and stuffing myself with canapés and fruity little party drinks in Frankfurt. Mostly I spent that on stuff that is deeply scaring (namely the new EU rules for valuation and depreciation of assets on balance sheets) but beside the point here. But I made sure to attend a "Direction Seminar" given by some EU apparatchiks to the IT guys. The long and short of it is that any company doing transnational business in the EU will soon have to submit a "data integrity plan" that contains measures for safeguarding data from collection and intrusion from "outside parties". As a part of that, any company dealing directly with the EU institutions or benefiting from EU funds in any manner whatsoever is supposed to begin to phase out US IT technology - beginning with US-based IT consultancies, but moving on to requiring no US-based cloud storage (already a requirement for EU health based services, btw) and eventually to software for individual work stations as well.

As I said - much of this is sheer and unabashed protectionism, probably driven mostly by the French, safe in the knowledge that there is no way in the world that the US will be able to protest it successfully at the WTO level in the age of PRISM/national security letters/NSA. Even better, I hear that ASEAN/APT is rapidly moving in the same direction.

Interesting article for those of you wondering how all of this progresses:

NSA Leaks Shift Market Share to European Cloud Providers | MIT Technology Review

All Hail Obama, who knows how to pay his friends at Facebook, Google, Apple, MS, Amazon and the rest of the US-based IT industry back. Verily, the line of rubes gets longer by the day.
