We know that primitive humans helped the injured to survive, and animals may be capable of the same. For creatures in the animal kingdom the survivability of the tribe can be enhanced by a recognition of eminent death because resources can be more usefully allocated by those who are healthy. So that might be the imputed threshold. When the level of a creatures society reaches a level where compassion becomes a factor, then a death wish may become operable.
Well, we have seen video evidence of that - dogs dragging wounded comrades out of harm's way from highways and such.

They know and understand danger and harm....

Do they know someday they will die? Yes it is a complex and profound question, and a philosophical one.

I already answered that question I believe; Until they have a purpose to know that . . . they don't; and then perhaps they do, and if it does, it may become a part of their consciousness through adaptation and natural selection, but this is only true of higher creatures.

I quote myself with your bolded reference retained:

I said "deathwish" but that may not mean a conscious wish for or recognition of death.

I guess the one true answer is, we will never know.

Kind of like the question, 'do cats think.' Unless you are a cat, you can't know for sure.

We've seen crows demonstrate reason.... Cats and dogs too. Can be quantified when they use tools and problem solve.

But to they ruminate about their lot in life? Do they worry or fret? I just don't know.

ON that basis you'd have to exclude some humans.

My cat frets when I'm not feeling well. Is it about me or ultimately about her?

If it's a cat, it's ultimately about the cat.

Good question!

Animals seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to illness. They apparently sense it, but if they fret about it, I don't know.

Could be just instinct.
