Default If you've never read this book, get it. The Frankenstein Papers

By Fred Saberhagen, 1995

I read this back in '95 and recently found it again and read it, again. They should make it into a movie.

The story picks up where Mary Shelley's classic tale left off, continuing the narrative from the monster's point of view. Through flashbacks in the monster's journal, we get the monster's side of the story and find out he had nothing to do with the murders of Victor Frankenstein's brother William and fiancee Elizabeth, among other startling revelations.

The monster sets off on a quest for his own identity that takes him from the Arctic and his first sexual experience with an "Esquimeaux" all the way to a face to face meeting in Paris with Ben Franklin, whose earlier experiments with electricity had inspired Victor Frankenstein to attempt the monster's initial animation.

Throughout, the irrationality and high improbability of the monster's mere existence is set against the values and science of enlightenment Europe. In the tour-de-force ending, rationality triumphs and will leave you stunned, gratified and I shit you not - reaching for the tissue box!

You Kindle readers, it's in digital format now. But if you can find the original paperback, get it!

It's 5 stars.

I read it years ago, it is excellent. Dean koontz has also picked up the frankestien story in modern times. A series of five books, the first one called ''the prodigal son'' It is quite a different take, but excellent also.
