Default Alger Hiss: American hero /sarcasm

How can there be any doubt that Alger Hiss was an American hero?

Didn't he speak at Princeton University and receive a standing ovation?? That Liberal audience cheered him as a hero.....

And doesn't Bard College have the Alger Hiss Chair of Social Studies??? That liberal bastion honored him as a hero
(Lawrence Helm's Blog: The Alger Hiss Chair at Bard College)

And didn't Massachusetts, that most Liberal state, in 1972, readmit him to the bar....he, having lost his law license for some little problem....?
He must be some kind of hero.....
Mustn't he?

Let's see......
1. "Alger Hiss (November 11, 1904 – November 15, 1996) was an American lawyer, government official, author, and lecturer. He was involved in the establishment of the United Nations both as a U.S. State Department and U.N. official. Hiss was accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950." Alger Hiss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2. As Hitler marched into Poland, Whittaker Chambers arranged a private meeting with Adolf Berle, President Roosevelt’s assistant Sec’y of State. Chambers detailed the Communist espionage network, naming at least two dozen Soviet spies in Roosevelt’s administration, including Alger Hiss. Berle reported this to Roosevelt, who laughed, and told Berle to go f--- himself.
Arthur Herman, Joseph McCarthy: Reexaming the Life and Legacy of America’s Most Hated Senator, p. 60.

a. No action was taken, and in fact, Roosevelt promoted Hiss. Almost a decade later, Chambers was called before the HUAC and named Hiss as a Soviet agent. Hiss sued Chambers, at which time Chambers presented “… four notes in Alger Hiss's handwriting, sixty-five typewritten copies of State Department documents and five strips of microfilm, some of which contained photographs of State Department documents. The press came to call these the"PumpkinPapers" Whittaker Chambers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

b. Dean Acheson, then undersecretary of Treasury, not only vouched for Hiss and his brother, Donald, also charged by Whitaker, but Acheson immediately requested Donald as his assistant. Right on cue, the press vilified HUAC for persecuting Hiss. President Truman denounced the Hiss investigation as a “red herring” by do-nothing Republicans (Whitaker Chambers, Witness, p. 564-74)
Felix Frankfurter and Adlai Stevenson offered to be character witnesses for Hiss.

c. Eleanor Roosevelt said she believed Hiss.
But the American public listened to the hearings, and they believed Chambers: a Gallup poll found 4 out of 5 supported the HUAC.(Alan Weinstein, Perjury, p. 58) And the poll included 71% of Democrats who also agreed- just not the Democrat Party!

3. And not just the Democrat politicians! No...Liberal educrats needed to see to indoctrination in the schools: The federally funded “National History Standards” for elementary schools were released in 1994, cemented a revisionist view of American Communism for schoolteachers, as the guide mentions McCarthy over twenty times, while Edison and the Wright Brothers got no mention. “It …repeatedly condemns McCarthyism as an unmitigated evil…[but] the Hiss-Chambers and Rosenberg cases, the two dominant controversies of the anticommunist era, are described with bland, neutral language crafted to keep from implying guilt while not being quite so foolhardy as to actually assert innocence..’National Standards’…implies that the cases are part and parcel of the McCarthyite horror.”
“In Denial,” by Haynes and Klehr, pg. 151

So....let's see if we can make sense of this.
Liberals cheered, supported, endorsed, iconicized a paid Soviet spy who not only reported to Joseph Stalin.....

...but who influenced the course of world events in favor of the most homicidal regime in the world?????

What can one say about folks like that?

Look away, citizen. We all know McCarty was the real bogeyman.

I don't think any of us was particularly under the impression we were dealing with the fruits of Thomas' own pen here.

You'd done better trying to counter the arguments fielded. Or perhaps not.
