Default And now, the end is near...

and so we face the final curtain.

Quote:
Young people are less attached to democracy than their elders. “When asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 10 how ‘essential’ it is for them ‘to live in a democracy,’ 72 percent of those born before World War II check ’10,’ the highest value. So do 55 percent of the same cohort in the Netherlands. But … the millennial generation has grown much more indifferent. Only one in three Dutch millennials accords maximal importance to living in a democracy; in the United States, that number is slightly lower, around 30 percent … On the whole, support for political radicalism in North America and Western Europe is higher among the young, and support for freedom of speech lower.”

Americans increasingly support an all-powerful executive. “In the United States, among all age cohorts, the share of citizens who believe that it would be better to have a ‘strong leader’ who does not have to ‘bother with parliament and elections’ has also risen over time: In 1995, 24 percent of respondents held this view; by 2011, that figure had increased to 32 percent. Meanwhile, the proportion of citizens who approve of ‘having experts, not government, make decisions according to what they think is best for the country’ has grown from 36 to 49 percent.”

Support for popular sovereignty has declined especially quickly among the wealthy. “In 1995, the ‘rich’ (defined as deciles 8 to 10 on a ten-point income scale) were the most opposed to undemocratic viewpoints, such as the suggestion that their country would be better off if the ‘army’ ruled. Lower-income respondents (defined as deciles 1 to 5) were most in favor of such a proposition. Since then, relative support for undemocratic institutions has reversed. In almost every region, the rich are now more likely than the poor to express approval for ‘having the army rule.’”

This is an inescapable consequence of the fact that democracy has under delivered wildly since the end of the cold war. Imagine you're a millennial. You have crushing college debt. You have no job prospects worth shit. Your country is being overrun by millions of third worlders in the name of diversity and profit for the multinationals that are increasingly never going to employ anybody outside China again. Family is a sick joke. Free speech has been negotiated away on the altar of anti-racism and anti-sexism.

Frankly, I am amazed that more people don't cry out for strongmen.

Democracy delivered what the people wanted, socialism in ever increasing doses. Which, had the natural result of a world without much hope for improvement or prospects. If Millennials don't want to fight the trend *cough* Obama *Cough* Hillary *cough* then going the strongman route ain't going reverse the trend, only accelerate it.

After we burned the Representative Republic bridge and forgot about article 4 section 4 of the Constitution, it only took two or three generations to actually GET Democracy.

Which, was predicted and warned against by the founders and framers. What we're seeing isn't a failure of the system they envisioned and gave birth to, it's the perversion of it by its enemies, over generations.

Cloward-Piven. Alinsky. "We will bury you" mantra from the left, for all time.

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

More in general, democracy only works where there's a smidgen of responsibility in the electorate. Having ditched all that, it is probably a worse system than having a despot, if you can get your hand on the right despot.

A pure straight Democracy is probably size contingent. You can probably do it reasonably well with under 100 people, but once you start getting a much larger "Demos" then it is too easy to have the most "Active" groups controlling the process to their own ends. Hell, 100 might be too large as well, see US Senate.

Well, let's just say I'm not surprised at all. Between the curtailing of economic opportunity for the masses - and this is a huge difference that happened very quickly, the soft totalitarianism of the narrative and the total lack of the ruling class to even pretend to consult the people on issues like immigration, multiculturalism and feminism I have no trouble at all seeing why "democracy", late Western style, isn't exactly making dicks hard with excitement.
