Default Meet Cornpone

Yes, that's his name. It used to be Dale. Anyhow, when we moved to Tennessee this hideous creature started popping up at our house. He is the friendliest damned cat ever, and the Mrs decided to feed him, so his visits became a daily thing. During the winter when it got below freezing I would let it come in the house at night. Then he started getting his ass beat by something. So one morning I was home and he showed up a bloody mess with his eye covered in mucus, so we took him to the vet.

That was the damage. They shaved him, cleaned up the cuts, cut his junk off, tested him for FIV and Leukemia, gave him some shots, and sent him home. Now he's our pet. I am notoriously bad with cats, but he's a decent little specimen so I can deal with him quite easily. I'll get some better pics of him eventually, but he really is quite an ugly cat.

Here are some pics Mona took of him. This is him now.

Here's what he looked like when he came home from the vet.

cut his junk off
By far the biggest, permanent life changing for the better thing you could have done for him.

Was the vet bill something like 300 bucks? It's amazing what we will spend for these critters.

Congrats! You're a cat man now!

$287. I was rather irritated with that. Plus I got some lectures from the vet. I told them to do the tests for FIV first so I didn't pay to fix up a cat for no reason and I got that shocked and horrified look and the "FIV isn't a death sentence" lecture. Then when they gave me the total I asked Mona if she was sure because "we could probably get a new cat for that money" and again with the looks. But it worked out. He's a much better cat than he looks, and he looks much better now that he's an inside guy.

Except, yes it is. And it is highly contagious, the cat would be walking death to other cats.

I thought maybe it was just me, but why would an otherwise sane and rational man plop down 287 hard earned American dollars on a cat with AIDS?

When I was trapping and neutering for the barn cat program, my vet and I had a agreement: For the good of the feral cat population and the barn cat population, the FIV positive cat had to be put down. It is the only humane thing to do. This was in addition to the economic consideration of throwing good money (exam, shots, neutering) after bad.

So I'm right there with you.

Your vet must be nuts if he thinks it is okay for FIV positive cats to be running around. It's not okay.
