Default Mama don't allow no muse-lim reporters 'round here.

Al Jazeera journalist turned away at Booker game

This reporter from Al Jazeera just decided he could crash a Texas high school football game - unannounced - to interview people about how 9/11 affected them.

Note to Kevin Welch - I gave your story a much better lead and it really didn't take much.

“Ten miles. Sixteen kilometres. That’s how deep I got into Texas before being asked to leave,” Gabriel Elizondo wrote over the weekend in a blog post on Al Jazeera’s English website.

The breeze was warm, but the reception chilly when an Al Jazeera reporter stopped just inside the Texas line at a Booker High School football game.

Elizondo made the proverbial wrong turn Friday night during what he described as a two-week trek across the country to learn how 9/11 has affected life in America. Advised of Elizondo’s plans, Booker Superintendent Mike Lee told the journalist he could not film, shoot photographs of people or interview them.

As it turns out, the story had just begun. After Elizondo chronicled the incident in a blog post titled, “Welcome to Texas! Unless you’re Al Jazeera,” it caught the attention of readers and journalists across the country.

Was Elizondo’s reporting shut down simply because his business card carried the name Al Jazeera? He’s sure the answer is yes. Booker’s top school official responded differently.

“This individual ... showed up unannounced, was not previously known to me or anyone else at the district and offered only his business card as identification,” Lee said in a written statement. “The principal had concerns that these interviews would interfere with individuals watching the game and intrude on student privacy.”

Lee said his focus was on student safety.

“I had concerns about a self-purported journalist who admitted his purpose was not to report the game but to interview parents about 9/11,” he wrote. “Texas public school property, including a football stadium, is not a public forum. The District may place reasonable time, place and manner restrictions on public use of its facilities and reserves the right to use its facilities for school purposes.”

Elizondo said the story has taken on a life he did not intend.
Imagine that! Going around the country working for Al Jazeera, asking people how the terrorist attacks of 9/11 affected their lives, seems a bit sadistic to me. And he's surprised he doesn't get a warm reception everywhere?

Booker Texas of all places. Tiny town, people there mind their own business, but apparently it's a bad thing for them to expect other people to mind their own business too.

Yeah, his first mistake was trying anything like this in Texas, but from my estimation the fact that his business card reflected the name Al Jazeera was reason enough to shut him down.

The vast majority of Texans - especially small town Texans - are idealistically kind, helpful, hopeful and generous. In fact, in many cases Texans are extremely trusting because we assume that most people approach us with the same harmless motivations with which we would approach our neighbors. This "reporter" approached as a predator, not as a person with kind motives.

Sorry, MM, did not mean to offend Texans.

And besides all that, 9/11 and terrorism and global politics in general is the LAST thing we want to hear or even think about on Friday nights in the fall, at our hallowed ground of football stadiums. It's just simply not the venue for that type of interview - but it IS a venue for lone wolf type terrorist attacks!

I'm glad he didn't blow up. Muslims have been known to do that.

Hatred for Texas is as stupid, lame, and much bullshit as hatred for corporations, there is no reason or logic to it, it's just something for people to hate. I have been in Texas many times, once with a pack of bikers even, and they were always nice.
