Too much specialization and too much believing that knowledge in one highly specialized field confers knowledge in other fields just as specialized. And all along the average Joe has trouble with A) not knowing anything at all and B)Not being able to discern those who do have the specialized knowledge of a particular field from those whose knowledge of a specialized field might not be correct. For example giving Noam Chomsky the time of day on anything outside language theory and even then not being able to understand where he gets it wrong there.
