I found a little chest type freezer on craigslist.

They were asking $65 for this 5 cu. ft. chest freezer. They'd had it several years and they said it never gave them any trouble. It's a Haier brand, same as my trusty little beer fridge I've had for 10 years, and I researched it a little and found they're still selling this little unit for $220 retail today. So I sent them a email reply to their advert, with my phone number and a expression of interest.

The next morning (today) a lady called, she was the owner of the little freezer. I got some details about it from her then asked if she would take 50 bucks cash for it today. She said yes so I figured I would go take a look at it.

They can't use it because they downsized from a big 3br house with 2 car garage, to a little mobile home out in the brush. No room for it and the upright freezer they were also selling. She said it was working when they unplugged it and cleaned it prior to the move.

I got there and, pligger knees. There it sat, outside with the controls and wires all hanging out. Didn't look promising. The little "ears" on the plastic control panels were broken off, no way to re-attach these.

The guy came out and was like, "Yeah my wife forgot to mention this was slightly damaged in the move." I was already assessing the problem, and could see pretty quickly how to wire all this back up correctly, which I started doing as the guy went to go get a extension cord hooked up.

He gets there with the cord and we plug it in. A little spark as he plugged it in, but other than that nothing happened. No lights, no hum of the compressor, nada.

He goes back and checks and oops... The little breaker on the power strip he plugged into was tripped. Really bad sign. There's a dead short somewhere.

Wash, rinse, repeat. He reset the little breaker and we plugged it in again. Same result as before.

I'm like, "let's take the power strip out of the equation, make sure it's not just over sensitive and try again." All this time on his trips back and forth to the house, I had been reviewing my wiring job and could see nothing there that would be a dead short.

He comes back out with his phone and charger and plugs it into the extension cord. We have power and no more mean old tripping of the power strip. Good! We plug the freezer in.

Pop. Now the circuit breaker for the outlet he's using has tripped in the box. Really bad news. He goes back in to re-set it while I unplug the freezer and look once again, at this wiring.

To save your life I could see nothing wrong. There was nothing wrong with the wiring or the connections. The problem lies elsewhere - maybe the compressor motor is grounding out. But there was one more simple test to do before drawing any conclusions.

He comes back out and plugs his phone charger in again. We have power and there's no breaker tripping. This time though, I plug the OTHER freezer in, the upright he's got there too.

Pop. The breaker trips. A-Ha!

"You have a bad power cord here," I tell him.

He doesn't have another one, and we have no way to test this little freezer further, so I leave empty handed. Oh well.

About a hour later the lady calls again. She says they decided to just change their advert to make it say the little freezer was free for the first taker, but since I'd already make a trip out there they wanted to give me first shot at it. Would I come and just get it out of their yard?

I told her, "No... I don't mind giving you 20 bucks for it. The worst that can happen is I would have to trash it, I don't mind taking the risk because I believe what y'all said about it working up until the move and never giving you any problems up to now. I can fix anything that is wrong with it unless it's the compressor motor shot. So if you'll take 20 bucks, I'll come and get it." She said okay.

Driving back I reviewed the situation. It's far more likely the issue was with the extension cord than with the machine. At home I have all the meters and other diagnostic tools for electrical circuits, I was confident though there was nothing wrong with this freezer other than the cosmetic issues.

I went, we loaded it in the back of my truck, I gave them a 20 dollar bill and booked.

Refreshing, but not sure how the political elite will handle this. I'm sure the GOP elite will use it.

Hello, my name is Elbert Lee Guillory, and I’m the senator for the twenty-fourth district right here in beautiful Louisiana. Recently I made what many are referring to as a ‘bold decision’ to switch my party affiliation to the Republican Party. I wanted to take a moment to explain why I became a Republican, and also to explain why I don’t think it was a bold decision at all. It is the right decision — not only for me — but for all my brothers and sisters in the black community.

You see, in recent history the Democrat Party has created the illusion that their agenda and their policies are what’s best for black people. Somehow it’s been forgotten that the Republican Party was founded in 1854 as an abolitionist movement with one simple creed: that slavery is a violation of the rights of man.
Liberals know that their worldview no longer makes sense in light of scandal after scandal in Washington.

The high priests of liberalism must be tossing and turning in their organic cotton bedding and downing more small-batch artisanal whisky each night trying to cope with the abject failure of their cause.

They know, even if the masses do not yet fully understand, that their worldview no longer makes sense in light of scandal after scandal in Washington and that the end result could be a great, if slow, deconversion on the scale of the millions who no longer believe in the Christianity its philosophy replaced.

Government, they have told us, is inherently good, like the people it helps. Its largesse helps the poor, its inclusiveness expands rights for all and fairness motivates it. And it is intrinsic to individual success – as the hypothetical “Julia” portrayed in Barack Obama’s recent presidential campaign tried to prove.

Last week, in Nice, France, I was privileged to participate, along with 30 scholars, mostly scientists and mathematicians, in a conference on the question of whether the universe was designed, or at least fine-tuned, to make life, especially intelligent life. Participants -- from Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Berkeley and Columbia among other American and European universities -- included believers in God, agonistics and atheists.

But it was clear that the scientific consensus was that, at the very least, the universe is exquisitely fine-tuned to allow for the possibility of life. It appears that we live in a "Goldilocks Universe," in which both the arrangement of matter at the cosmic beginning and the values of various physical parameters -- such as the speed of light, the strength of gravitational attraction and the expansion rate of the universe - are just right. And unless one is frightened of the term, it also appears the universe is designed for biogenesis and human life.
As U.S. Plugs Border in Arizona, Crossings Shift to South Texas
By ERIC LIPTON and JULIA PRESTON
Published: June 16, 2013

WASHINGTON — A surge in migrant traffic across the Southwest border into Texas has resulted in a milestone: the front line of the battle against illegal crossings from Mexico has shifted for the first time in over a decade away from Arizona to the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

This shift has intensified a bitter debate under way in the Senate over whether the border is secure enough now, or ever will be, to move ahead with legislation that could give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants already here.

On Monday, the Senate was scheduled to resume a long series of votes on an immigration bill that is promising to end a cycle — playing out since the early 1990s — in which each time the Border Patrol cracks down in one enforcement zone along the border, migrants move to another.

Now the Rio Grande Valley has displaced the Tucson enforcement zone as the hot spot, with makeshift rafts crossing the river in increasing numbers, high-speed car chases occurring along rural roads and a growing number of dead bodies turning up on ranchers’ land, according to local officials.
Obama Joins G-8 Allies Isolating Putin Over Assad
By Mike Dorning & Ilya Arkhipov - Jun 17, 2013 10:00 PM CT

President Barack Obama and European allies moved to further isolate Russian president Vladimir Putin for supporting the regime in Syria even as the leaders sought a way to push both sides in that nation’s civil war into talks.
“Of course, our opinions do not coincide, but all of us have the intention to stop the violence in Syria,” Putin said yesterday after meeting with Obama on the sidelines of a summit in Northern Ireland.

“We do have differing perspectives,” Obama said, adding that “we share an interest in reducing the violence.”
In a public split rare at global summits, some western leaders gathered for the Group of Eight industrial nations publicly rebuked Putin for backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a bloody conflict that has killed more than 93,000 people. A British official, who asked not to be identified, called the event a clarifying moment in differences over Syria.
Tom Francois was visited by the Secret Service merely because he posted anti-Obama messages for his “large” Twitter following to read. I am sick and tired of looking out the window to see if Old Glory is still flying to reaffirm my shaky belief that I still reside in America. Francois never threatened the president; he simply lambasts and lampoons his actions, facial expressions, and unconstitutional policies. The most thin-skinned president in the history of the Republic has proven once again that he has nothing but disdain for the First Amendment.

The Secret Service agents arrived at the home of Tom Francois and asked if they could come inside and take a look around. Noting that he had nothing to hide and not wanting to see his things tossed about if the agents were forced to wait for a warrant, the avid political cartoon creator let the men inside. Francois maintains that while he loathes Barack Obama’s policies, he has never threatened his being in any way, shape, or form. I scanned hundreds of Francois’ tweets (which were the cited reasons for the Secret Service agents arriving on the blogger’s porch), and saw nothing violent—just the same angst felt by millions of Constitution-loving patriots.

Please post here your ideas and ideals regarding US immigration policy. Keep it simple and straightforward, the aim is to be productive and see if we can come up with some common ground on the issue.

Any posts which look like debate or argument, or dispute, I will move to one of the other Immigration threads, or just delete. I want folks to be able to post their "perfect world" scenario on immigration in this thread without back and forth sniping.

Questions are allowed for clarification purposes, but watch the rhetorical ones.

Everyone in?
Go!
